Petrol vs EV calculator
Should your next ride be electric?
Put in how you ride today. See what an electric scooter would save each month, and how long it takes to earn back the extra price.
How this is worked out
Each month's running cost is the energy you use plus servicing spread over twelve months. For the petrol bike, energy is kilometres ÷ mileage × petrol price. For the EV, it is kilometres ÷ km per unit × your electricity rate. The difference is your monthly saving.
Payback is the extra price of switching divided by that monthly saving. "Ahead after 5 years" is five years of savings minus the extra price; if it is negative, the switch costs more than it saves over that time.
Finding your scooter's real efficiency
Take the range owners actually report, not the certified figure, and divide it by the usable battery size in kWh. A scooter that really does 90 km on a 3 kWh battery manages 30 km per unit.
What to check before you decide
- Whether a central or state subsidy applies today. Schemes change, so check the current rules before you buy.
- Battery warranty length and what a replacement costs after it ends.
- Where you will charge: a safe socket at home or office matters more than the numbers above.
- Insurance, which is not included here because it is similar for both.
